Educational technology (Ed-Tech) is playing a transformative role in early childhood education in India, helping bridge long-standing gaps in access, quality, and equity. The New Education Policy 2020 recognizes the power of technology in improving learning outcomes by supporting teachers, breaking language barriers, creating digital libraries, and expanding access to education beyond the four walls of a classroom. The growing availability of affordable smartphones and digital platforms has made it possible for children in even the most remote corners of the country to engage with quality learning experiences.
One of the most powerful contributions of Ed-Tech lies in how it supports Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), the development of skills and attitudes that help children manage emotions, build relationships, and thrive. SEL is foundational to a child’s well-being and long-term success, and today’s technologies are making it easier and more cost-effective to nurture these abilities. Tools like virtual tutors, video chats, augmented reality, and even robotics (such as the NAO Robot) are making learning more interactive and responsive. Digital games help children learn persistence and emotional regulation, while apps like Class Dojo and Bloomz help teachers and parents support children’s emotional growth by encouraging positive communication and reflection. Beyond the classroom, Ed-Tech is a powerful tool for improving equity in education. Mobile phones, in particular, have emerged as vital gateways to learning, especially in rural India. Distance learning platforms like SWAYAM, SWAYAM PRABHA, DIKSHA, and ePathshala now bring expert-led courses and teaching resources directly to households. Even low-tech solutions like WhatsApp and phone calls have proven invaluable in sharing learning materials in communities with limited connectivity. Many states have also updated their textbooks with QR codes that link to additional digital learning modules, helping students access high-quality resources at home.
During the pandemic, traditional media like television and radio stepped up, providing crucial learning content to millions and reminding us that inclusive, tech-enabled education doesn’t always need a smartphone. For gender equity, technology has helped break down barriers, offering women and girls access to learning in the safety and convenience of their homes. Initiatives like Self-Help Groups using mobile phones to spread awareness around health, finance, and education are changing the game by empowering women and challenging long-standing gender norms.
Ed-Tech also holds immense promise for inclusive education, especially for children with special needs. Assistive technologies and accessible learning platforms allow students with disabilities to learn at their own pace and on their own terms. Platforms like DIKSHA and the National Institute of Open Schooling have introduced features like audio libraries, sign language support, and DAISY-format content for visually or hearing-impaired learners ensuring no child is left behind.
At Sesame Workshop India, we’ve seen these possibilities come alive through our own initiative, Chalo! Sesame Street, a free, ad-free, gamified learning app built to address foundational learning gaps among young children, especially in underserved areas. Designed to work in low-bandwidth environments and available in multiple Indian languages, the app combines playful, interactive learning with beloved characters like Elmo, Chamki, Basma, and Cookie Monster. Children learn early literacy, numeracy, life skills, and social-emotional competencies through stories, games, and songs that spark joy and curiosity. What makes Chalo! even more impactful is the way it includes parents and educators offering tools to track progress and work together to support each child’s growth.
In a rapidly changing world, Ed-Tech is more than just a convenience, it’s a powerful equalizer. With thoughtful integration, it can ensure that every child, no matter where they live or what challenges they face, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
