Air We Are: Children for Green Tomorrows

The air we breathe shapes the world our children inherit. For young children, a clean and healthy environment isn’t just about comfort, it’s about survival, growth, and a brighter future. Research increasingly shows that exposure to polluted air affects physical health, learning, and development. Children’s developing bodies and brains make them especially vulnerable, with impacts that can stretch from prenatal development into adulthood. Pollutants from vehicles, fossil fuels, crop burning, and wildfires, like nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter can affect memory, behavior, and even increase risks of conditions such as anxiety, depression, and autism spectrum disorders. Low-income communities are often hardest hit, facing higher pollution levels and fewer resources to mitigate exposure.

The good news? The problem is solvable. Reducing air pollution protects children’s health while also addressing climate change. Clean air is not just a scientific or political issue; it’s a shared responsibility. Families, schools, and communities that embrace healthy habits help children breathe easier, focus better, and grow stronger. Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) education in India reinforces these habits, showing children that small, consistent actions can be life-changing.

At Sesame Workshop India, we believe every child deserves to grow smarter, stronger, and kinder in a safe, healthy environment. This belief drives our Mera Planet, Mera Ghar (My Planet, My Home) initiative. Through playful, action-driven activities, children learn why protecting the planet matters and how choices like conserving water, sorting waste, and planting trees can make a difference. The program also establishes eco clubs in schools, turning classrooms into hubs of green innovation, and engages parents to support sustainable habits at home. When children lead with curiosity and hope, they show us that protecting the planet is about empathy and responsibility across generations. Programs like Mera Planet, Mera Ghar demonstrate what’s possible when education, health initiatives, and advocacy come together.

Air pollution is a real challenge, but so is the opportunity. By empowering children today, we can build cleaner, greener, and kinder communities tomorrow. Protecting children means protecting the future and there’s no mission more urgent or more hopeful than that.
